Tea Tree Oil Side Effects:
Tea tree oil has been used safely and effectively for hundreds of years. However, along with being an effective product, tea tree oil is also very potent and there are a few rare tea tree oil side effects you should be aware of.
100% Tea tree oil can be too potent for a few people to tolerate and can cause irritation of the skin. If irritation does occur consider applying smaller amounts or diluting tea tree oil to a lesser concentration. Tea tree oil should also be used at a lesser concentration on young children as their skin tends to be more sensitive and side effects may occur.
As with almost anything, there are some people that can be allergic to tea tree oil and will not be able to use it, especially those prone to allergies. If an allergic reaction tea tree oil side effect does happen, then it is best to completely discontinue use. If you are one of those who are pre-disposed to allergies then it is best to test tea tree oil on a small patch of skin before routine use. Just apply a very small amount of tea tree oil to a very small patch of skin and leave in place for at least 12 hours to see if a reaction takes place. If signs of an allergic reaction are present then wash tea tree oil off with cold water and do not use.
Do not ingest tea tree oil. The side effects of tea tree oil when swallowed can be dangerous, it has been found to be toxic when ingested. Some of tea tree oil side effects when ingested include: confusion, weakness, skin rash, and even comas. Tea tree oil is safe to use orally as long as it is not swallowed, for example in a toothpaste or mouthwash. As with all medications, be sure and keep tea tree oil out of reach of small children.
Tea tree oil side effects have not been toughly studied in pregnancy, therefore the use of tea tree oil in pregnancy or when breastfeeding is not recommended.
